Justin Trudeau strikes back with retaliatory levies after Trump imposes tariffs on Canadian goods

The prime minister on Saturday night announced some of the 25 per cent tariffs against the U.S. would begin Tuesday.

OTTAWA鈥擠espite weeks of cross-border meetings, the creation of expert councils, and the swift implementation of a $1.3-billion Canadian border security plan, U.S. President Donald Trump made good on his punishing tariff threats on Saturday, with Canada following suit just hours later.

“We don’t want to be here. We didn’t ask for this. But we will not back down,” Prime Minister Justin Trudeau told reporters on Parliament Hill late in the evening.聽
