Ontario’s police watchdog is investigating after a man was fatally shot by Peel Regional Police听at听Pearson International Airport Thursday morning. Follow the Star’s real-time coverage below.听
Heavy police presence still outside Pearson as officers investigate
As of Tuesday afternoon, nearly seven hours after the fatal shooting, the scene remained active as officers carefully investigated the area and a forensic photographer captured several photos.
Eight Peel police cars and two SIU trucks lined the streets directly outside the Terminal 1 departures area. The roadway closure towards the Terminal 1 departures is still in effect.
Officers tried to deescalate situation before shooting
SIU spokesperson Kristy Denette said officers had a brief conversation with the man while he was seated in the back of the Jeep, attempting to deescalate the situation for what 鈥渟eemed like a few minutes.鈥 The man then stepped out, she said, showing a firearm to officers. Two officers then drew their guns and fired at him. At least one officer is believed to have been wearing a body-worn camera, she added.听
Police scene at airport will remain in place for a few hours as evidence is collected.
Man with firearm described as 'a little erratic'; body camera footage being reviewed

A 30-year-old man is dead after being shot by police at Toronto’s Pearson airport Thursday morning. The Special Investigations Unit is investigating.
Andrew Francis Wallace/海角社区官网StarSIU spokesperson Kristy Denette told reporters this afternoon that a man in distress “produced a firearm,” but did not discharge it.
The man was initially in the backseat of the Jeep Cherokee when officers arrived. Denette described him as “possibly a little bit erratic,” “in mental distress”, “agitated” and “raising his voice a little bit.”
When asked by reporters about Peel Police’s earlier claim that the individual pointed a firearm at officers, Denette said she could not confirm that it was pointed, only that it was shown.
She said body-worn camera footage is being reviewed.
Peel Police were called to resolve dispute in departures area when individual pointed 'firearm' at officers

The scene of the shooting, just outside the departures area.
Andrew Francis Wallace 海角社区官网StarPeel Police Chief Nishan Duraiappah said this was not an attack on the airport itself, one of the busiest hubs in North America.
“Shortly before 7 a.m. this morning, Peel Police received a call from a member of the public to assist in resolving a dispute at Terminal 1 departures level right at the curb side,” Duraiappah told reporters during a news conference at the airport just before noon. “Our officers that responded went to the aid of security that was already here.”
Three officers responded to the call and used an “immense amount of deescalation” to try to resolve the dispute, the chief said.
“Abruptly, one of the individuals produced a firearm,” and pointed it at the officers.
“As a result of that, to protect themselves and the community and the passengers here at the airport, two of the officers” shot the man, the chief said.

Despite efforts by the officer as well as paramedics to provide life-saving aid, the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
The incident was 100 per cent contained outside the airport and surrounding one vehicle. The group had been at the airport for the purposes of travelling. There is “no threat to public safety,” the chief said.
Passenger describes 'smell of gunpowder in the air'
Chris Rhind was at the airport with his five-year-old son when the gunfire broke out.
The 35-year-old 海角社区官网resident said the pair were getting their bags from their Uber at Terminal 1 when they heard what sounded like between eight and 12 gunshots about 200 metres away.
鈥淲e weren鈥檛 sure if it was gunfire, construction, aviation equipment or something else,鈥 he said.
Visibly, there was nothing unusual in the distance.
鈥淭here was a light smell of gunpowder in the air,鈥 Rhind said, and his son asked if fireworks were going off.
Inside the airport, no one knew what was going on. Rhind, his son and other passengers watched through the glass as several police cruisers and an ambulance arrived.
They didn鈥檛 find out it was a shooting until they were on their flight to Vancouver, after seeing a post online from Peel police.
鈥淭hankfully my son is in good spirits,鈥 Rhind said in a message from the plane.
鈥淚t was just random luck that we got out of our car where we did; if we had exited 200 metres further into the terminal, we would鈥檝e been in the middle of the shooting and at risk of a stray bullet.鈥
Peel police clarify errors in original SIU reports
Information provided by the SIU initially indicated that three officers had discharged their firearms at the man, who they said was transported to hospital. Peel police later clarified that only two officers had fired shots, and that the man had been pronounced dead at the scene.

“By the time we checked our luggage, there were many emergency vehicles on both sides of the ramps coming up to departures,” she wrote.
Jonathan, who was travelling with her husband and two children, said she is “very shaken” knowing how close the shooting was.
“My paramount feeling is gratitude for the safety of my family,” she wrote. “I’ll be taking a day to hug the family upon my return home.”
