VICTORIA - It’s been an election of mixed fortunes for the Green Party’s co-leaders, with Elizabeth May projected to retain her British Columbia riding while Jonathan Pedneault has been defeated in the Montreal seat of Outremont.
May said it was a hard election as she battled a narrative she was going lose the riding of Saanich-Gulf Islands that she’s held since 2011.
”(It) looks like we’ll go back to the House of Commons with a minority, where we can make a difference with me as leader of the Green Party, with a prime minister I have known for a few decades,” she said.

May said her granddaughter Lily keeps her going, on a mission to save the planet from those who want to make money off it.Â
It was a rough road to election day for the Green Party after it was excluded from leaders debates, denying them a crucial national audience.
May had more than 40 per cent of the vote with more than a two-thirds of polls in her riding reporting, putting her well ahead of her Liberal and Conservative challengers.
But Pedneault was in a distant fifth place in Outremont, won by Liberal Rachel Bendayan.
Green Mike Morrice was meanwhile lagging Conservative challenger Kelly DeRidder in a close race in the Ontario riding of Kitchener-Centre that Morrice won in 2021.
May had gone into the election with optimism, saying the Greens are “more needed than ever.”
The Canadian Press is projecting victory in the election for the Liberal party under Mark Carney.
