Ontario voters helped deliver Mark Carney a Liberal minority government 鈥 with an improbable assist from Progressive Conservative Premier Doug Ford.
As Justin Trudeau did in 2015, 2019 and 2021, Carney’s Liberals were winning or leading in much of Ontario as of 11:30 p.m. with the city of 海角社区官网and the GTA providing the bulwark for the rookie prime minister.聽
Ontario is home to 122 of the 343 ridings that were up for grabs.聽Carney claimed victory in his riding of Nepean.
But the former Bank of Canada and Bank of England governor had some help from the most powerful Tory in Ontario.
In an extraordinary intervention, Ford expressed criticism of Pierre Poilievre’s campaign for not following his PC playbook from his Feb. 27 re-election in Ontario and focusing on the threat of聽U.S. President Donald Trump to Canada.
“Sometimes the truth hurts,” Ford said two weeks ago when defending his political guru Kory Teneycke’s charge the federal Conservatives were guilty of “campaign malpractice” for failing to recognize Trump was the ballot question.
The Star revealed last month that Poilievre finally reached out to the premier for the first time on March 17 for an awkward phone call some two and a half years after he became federal leader.
In contrast, Carney travelled from Ottawa to breakfast with Ford at Wally’s Grill in Etobicoke before he was even sworn in as prime minister and sources said the two leaders remained in constant communication during the campaign.
Poilievre was slow to grasp how the political landscape had changed in Ontario after former Liberal prime minister Justin Trudeau’s departure last month 鈥 and his Tories were undermined by the collapse of the NDP.
In his Ottawa-area riding of Carleton, the 21-year MP trailed in early returns, where the count was slow due to a protest that stacked the ballot with 91 candidates.
Three former New Democrat MPPs who left Queen’s Park for national politics failed in their bids for federal seats as progressive voters flocked to the Grits.
Bhutila Karpoche lost to Liberal Karim Bardeesy 鈥 whom she had defeated in the 2022 provincial election 鈥 in Taiaiako’n鈥擯arkdale鈥擧igh Park, while Monique Taylor was thrashed by Liberal MP Lisa Hepfner in Hamilton Mountain.
In Ottawa Centre, Joel Harden fell short to Liberal MP Yasir Naqvi in a reversal of political fortunes from the 2018 provincial race where Harden unseated Naqvi.
Former deputy 海角社区官网mayor Jennifer McKelvie won in Ajax for the Liberals, a seat the governing party had held.
Evan Solomon, a former CTV and CBC broadcaster, won 海角社区官网Centre for the Liberals. Solomon, a close friend of Carney, returned to Canada from New York City to run in the riding previously held by Liberal Marci Ien, who did not run again.聽
In Toronto-St. Paul’s, Tory MP Don Stewart, who won the traditional Liberal seat in a byelection last June that sent shock waves through the political landscape, was defeated by Liberal Leslie Church in a rematch.
“We are going to work hard together. I am so grateful,” said Church.
There was a bright spot for the Tories in the city 鈥 Roman Baber, a former MPP turfed from Ford’s PC caucus after speaking out against COVID-19 lockdown measures during the pandemic, won against Liberal incumbent Ya’ara Saks in York Centre.
The premier’s new federal seatmate in Etobicoke North is John Zerucelli, a well-regarded brewing executive and former senior political aide to Trudeau and premier Dalton McGuinty.
In Eglinton-Lawrence, the race was too close to call between Conservative former city councillor Karen Stintz and Liberal Vince Gasparro, who fell 167 votes short of taking the seat in Ontario’s recent provincial election two months ago. It was a dead heat at press time. The seat had been held by Liberal Marco Mendicino, now Carney’s chief of staff.聽
Bill Blair, former 海角社区官网police chief and long-time cabinet minister, was re-elected in Scarborough-Southwest.
In Burlington, Liberal incumbent Karina Gould, who had run for the Grit leadership won by Carney on March 9, was re-elected.
Parm Gill, who left Ford’s cabinet and quit his Milton seat to run in Milton East-Halton Hills South under Poilievre, was re-elected.
In Peterborough-Kawartha, a traditional bellwether riding,聽Conservative incumbent Michelle Ferreri lost to Liberal Emma Harrison, a third-generation farmer and a former member of Canada’s national lacrosse team.
In Windsor West, there was a tight three-way race as NDP incumbent Brian Masse faced his toughest test yet against Tory and Liberal challengers. But Conservative candidate Harb Gill pulled ahead.
Similarly, in Hamilton Centre, NDP incumbent Matthew Green was also fighting for his political life but lost out to Liberal candidate Aslam Rana.聽
