Interior designer Amanda Aerin shows off a new pair of chairs with black woven frames that resemble tree branches. Additional comfy seating is provided by two arm chairs reupholstered in white, and a custom lounge in moss green. It鈥檚 a peaceful spot for enjoying nature, unwinding with cocktails, reading or chatting on the phone. A white-on-white 2D clay artwork made by daughter and artist Logan Zatzman adds texture and interest to the wall.
The green chaise in the living room close to the floor-to-ceiling window, mediates between the black-and-white tone of the living room and the forested backyard and hill behind the house.
Cream-coloured cut velvet upholstery gives new life to the family鈥檚 older L-shaped sectional, formerly dressed in brown leather. Their square coffee table was refinished in ebony, and a cognac leather accent chair added for visual warmth. Zatzman opted to warm the floor and lighten the room with white carpeting. 鈥淪pill something, I don鈥檛 care!鈥 she declares.
Old and new come together in this elegant vignette where a light oak, bowed-front console plays a supporting role to traditional candelabras that belonged to Zatzman鈥檚 grandmother. They 鈥渨orked really well in the space,鈥 which also features textured wallpaper and a modern mirror for 鈥渁 beautifully curated look,鈥 Aerin explains.
A statement painting by Logan Zatzman 鈥 she chose the vibrant colours聽鈥 provides an arresting background to the one-of-a-kind dining table surrounded by cane chairs in a mid-century modern style. Overhead, five suspended light fixtures in black and brass, and different heights and sizes, turn into 鈥済lowing spheres鈥 at night, according to Aerin.
Zatzman still smiles every time she looks at the unusual table she and Aerin helped create. They used chains and tools to add wear-and-tear markings to the base, which comprises three U-shaped forms made of multiple pieces of wood laminated together. The two women had a 鈥渟uch a good laugh trying to distress these pieces of wood,鈥 recalls Aerin.
The welcome mat is always out at the Zatzmans鈥. Over the years, they鈥檝e opened their 海角社区官网home to the pals of their four children, who are now grown, to relatives and to long-time friends. So when the family downsized to a dark and uninviting 70-year-old house a few years ago, a redesign was clearly in order.
The two-storey residence looked dated and unappealing with grey office carpeting, lighting that lacked lustre and furniture that had seen better days.
Yet the open floor plan, sunken living room, and wall of windows looking into the backyard gave it character and an architectural style worth preserving.

It was also important to homeowner Michelle Zatzman to get full use of the entire main floor and to keep some of their furniture.
So she enlisted to infuse the living space with warmth and a luxury esthetic.
Aerin, host of a TV real estate show and a specialist in creating upscale, personalized interiors, appreciated Zatzman鈥檚 鈥渟trong design ideas鈥 as she guided her client through the makeover. With lighting, flooring and decor updates, they blended different styles to form what Aerin calls a 鈥渨arm, luxurious and inviting hosting space.鈥
In the large rectangular living room, separate seating areas were arranged at either end, with a clear sightline connecting to nature outside.
Some pieces of furniture were refreshed and incorporated into the redesign, while other custom items were brought in to suit the space. Zatzman, who loves to cook and host big luncheons and dinners, notes that guests are particularly impressed with the dining room with its bold painting and long glass-topped table.
Every part of the big, comfortable living room gets a regular workout, thanks to the family鈥檚 indoor activities and antics of their Goldendoodle, Sadie.
鈥淭here鈥檚 only joy from each space, each piece 鈥 when we鈥檙e all together,鈥 notes Zatzman. 鈥淚 would not change anything.鈥
For Aerin, transforming the home gave her a new appreciation for the 鈥渏oy of hosting,鈥 which she鈥檒l showcase in a 鈥渇ab space鈥 at the being held at the 海角社区官网Congress Centre, April 25 to 27.
